Bilateral relations
The High Commission of the Republic of Kenya in the Republic of Zambia is accredited to the Republic of Malawi and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA). COMESA, established in 1994, seeks to strengthen regional integration among its twenty-one (21) Member States. The Republic of Kenya, as a founding Member of the regional bloc, has over the years played a central and catalytic role in its development. Kenya has provided exemplary leadership in advancing COMESA’s integration agenda, notably by championing the ratification of the COMESA–EAC–SADC Tripartite Free Trade Agreement (TFTA), which entered into force in July 2024. Kenya hosts four (4) key COMESA institutions namely the: COMESA Monetary Institute, Trade and Development Bank, African Trade & Investment Development Insurance (ATIDI) and PTA Reinsurance Company (ZEP-RE). Kenya currently serves as Chair of COMESA for the period 2025–2026, under the visionary leadership of H.E. Dr. William Samoei Ruto, CGH, President of the Republic of Kenya. In this capacity, Kenya bears the solemn responsibility of providing strategic direction and political stewardship to the regional bloc and is further mandated to preside over all sectoral ministerial and technical meetings with a view to enhancing intra-COMESA trade and fostering inclusive, sustainable and resilient economic transformation within the region. Kenyan nationals continue to serve with distinction within COMESA institutions, including Justice Aggrey Muchelule, who serves as Principal Judge of the COMESA Court of Justice and Amb. John Kakonge, who serves on the COMESA Committee of Elders, which is mandated to support peace-building and conflict-resolution efforts within Member States. The Republic of Kenya and the Republic of Zambia enjoy cordial and fraternal bilateral relations predating independence. Both countries cooperate within the framework of the Joint Permanent Commission for Cooperation (JPCC) established in 1982. Since its inception, the JPCC has convened nine (9) sessions, complemented by a Mid-Term Review (MTR) mechanism. The areas of cooperation under the JPCC include, inter alia, tourism, trade and investment, ICT, agriculture, health, education and cooperatives. Kenya’s bilateral relations with the Republic of Malawi are equally strong, friendly and long-standing, dating back to 1964. Cooperation is anchored in the Kenya–Malawi Joint Permanent Commission for Cooperation (JPCC), established in 1999, through which the two (2) countries collaborate across a broad range of sectors, including trade, defence, education, health and public administration among others. Since its establishment, three (3) sessions of the JPCC have been convened with the most recent session having been held in Nairobi in October 2021.
